Description

Mark Packer, MD, is an otolaryngologist at Intermountain Health’s McKay-Dee, Layton Parkway Clinic, and Bountiful Ear Nose & Throat Clinics specializing in otology and neurotology. He completed a 2-year accredited fellowship and has 24 years of experience treating diseases of the skull base, middle ear, and mastoid, specializing in implantable hearing technologies. Dr. Packer was hand-picked by the Surgeon General as the founding Director of the  DoD/VA Hearing Center of Excellence; advised the President's Council of Advisors for Science and technology,  NIH, and Congress on hearing health matters, chaired NATO hearing research projects, and was selected as clinical professor of the year twice by St Louis University. Dr. Packer especially enjoys helping patients through hearing rehabilitation, and hearing restoration surgery because it allows patients to reengage and connect with their lives, families, and friends in a more meaningful way, recognizing that hearing optimizes the value to life. Dr. Packer’s philosophy of care is, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” He prioritizes healthy habits knowing they can often prevent hardship and heartache. As a provider, Dr. Packer believes Healthcare is a relationship. He enjoys counseling with patients to help them with the problems they are dealing with by offering his training and experience to open doors to solutions and better health. He feels comfortable and confident in providing medical and surgical care for problems of the ears, nose and throat, and wants to help others feel comfortable with their health care decisions. Dr. Packer retired from the USAF as a Colonel, having served 25 years on active duty for the military. He advocated for military members as a legal expert and worked with the DoD and VA to provide hearing solutions from protective measures to the full array of hearing aids and implantable systems. He led four humanitarian ear surgery missions, and directed temporal bone dissection courses instructing and certifying military surgeons on cochlear implants, bone conduction implants, middle ear implants including totally implantable hearing aids and instruction for non-surgical indwelling solutions such as Lyric and Ear Lens hearing aids. Although primarily responsible for the prioritization and programming of research, Dr. Packer authored 12 chapters for Otologic textbooks, and over 30 peer-reviewed publications.  Originally from Bountiful, Utah, Dr. Packer served in the U.S. Air Force, discharging at the rank of colonel. He and his wife are a family of five, and love spending time in the mountains hiking, biking, backpacking, kayaking — though mostly, he just follows his wife around.
